The Sleepy Time Gal (2002)

‘What if life’s nothing but a shitload of missed chances?’ wonders Frances (Bisset), a middle-aged char irritating to make brains of a well-to-do, successful, disturbing life after she’s diagnosed with cancer. ‘Hopes realised. People loving people,’ counters the man she should comprise married (Cassel). ‘A attention of shared destiny. A willingness to up sticks with things.’ Münch’s film is full of artistic conversations as though this. It feels more similar kind a literary blockbuster than a movie. The subplot involving Plimpton as a counselor-at-law maddening to keep an eye on down her natural mother - who put her up for adoption - also feels like a literary device. That said, Munch’s fairly awkward cerebral treatment is infinitely preferable to the tear-sodden melodrama Hollywood specialises in, and he gets a complex, beautifully valid performance unconfined of Bisset.
