Muriel’s Wedding review
December 17, 2009 | |
Rather too obviously aimed at the Strictly Ballroom take oneself to be sympathize-good market, this is nevertheless an engaging, funny and sometimes surprisingly unbending romantic comedy upon individual Muriel Hislop, an unsophisticated white Jane (Collette), who’ll do anything - including in hiding - to up-anchor her inured hometown of Porpoise Spit in pursuit of dreams fuelled by ABBA songs. It could do with a teeny-weeny more irony, not to say originality, but the perkiness of the script, casting conniving and performances (notably Griffiths as Muriel’s pal) carry it through with flying, tinselly colours.
